Single Origin Olive Oil vs Blended — Which Should You Buy?

What Does Single Origin Mean In Olive Oil?

A single origin olive oil comes from olives grown in one defined location — typically a single estate, farm, or region — pressed into oil and bottled without blending with oils from other sources. Every drop in the bottle came from the same grove, the same harvest, the same press.

This matters because it means the oil is traceable, the flavour profile reflects one specific terroir, and there's a specific source accountable for quality.

What Is A Blended Olive Oil?

A blended olive oil combines oils from multiple origins — sometimes multiple countries — to achieve consistency or reduce cost. Blending is not inherently negative; master blenders create genuinely excellent products. The problem is that blending also allows producers to obscure the origin of lower-quality oils within a blend.

When a label says 'Product of the EU' or 'Blend of Mediterranean oils' without specifying a country or region, it's almost certainly a commercial blend where traceability is minimal.

Monocultivar — The Purest Expression Of Single Origin

Within single origin oils, monocultivar takes specificity one step further. A monocultivar olive oil is pressed from a single olive variety — think of it like a single grape variety in wine. A Koroneiki from Crete. A Coratina from Puglia. A Picual from Andalusia.

Each variety has a distinct flavour profile. This is why serious olive oil enthusiasts collect monocultivar oils the way wine collectors seek out single-variety wines — each one is a distinct experience, not just a cooking ingredient.

When To Choose Single Origin

  • When you want to taste the oil as a standalone experience — on bread, as a finishing pour
  • When health benefits matter — single origin early harvest oils consistently show higher polyphenol content
  • When provenance and traceability matter to you

The beauty of these oils is that they are truly unique. They have distinct flavors and consistent profiles. There a charm in exploring different varieties and even the same varieties from different regions. For example our coratina from Chile tastes different than our coratina from Puglia. same variety different region and so on and so forth.
